Are you struggling to keep in touch without bothering people?
Many of us want to stay connected with our friends, clients, or professional contacts, but it can be tricky. You don’t want to disappear from their minds, yet you also don’t want to send messages that feel annoying or meaningless. So how do you stay in touch in a way that people actually appreciate?
The answer is simple. Focus on being genuine, helpful, and consistent. Here’s how.
1. Prioritize value over frequency. I recently worked with a client who thought sending holiday emails such as “Happy Thanksgiving” or “Merry Christmas” was enough. While it’s nice to be polite, these generic messages don’t really connect. The reality is that most people don’t want canned greetings filling up their inbox.
Instead, people respond to emails that feel personal and useful. They want to learn more about you, your experiences, and how you can help. A good rule of thumb is to make your messages about 70% personal and 30% professional. Share your stories, lessons, or helpful tips, something that makes your emails feel real and not automated.
2. Mix up your communication channels. Find out how people like to communicate. Not everyone likes emails. Some prefer texts. Others like phone calls. Your job is to figure out what each person prefers and respect that.
When you do reach out, ask them how they like to stay in touch. Then keep track of their answers. This shows you care about their preferences and makes your communication more effective.
3. Be consistent without overdoing it. Consistency matters. People like knowing they will hear from you regularly, but they don’t like being bombarded. Find a rhythm that works for you and your audience.
For example, I told my client that sending two emails per week, one on Wednesday morning and one on Saturday morning, works really well. But the key is what you put in those emails. Share personal stories, everyday experiences, or helpful solutions to problems. Avoid generic messages at all costs. The goal is for people to look forward to your emails and even respond to them.
Make every message count. The biggest takeaway is this. It’s not about sending a lot of messages. It’s about sending meaningful messages. Focus on these three things:
- Provide value over frequency. Make every message something worth reading.
- Respect communication preferences. Email, text, or call, whatever works for them.
- Stay consistent. Find the right rhythm and stick to it without overdoing it.
Keep good records, set reminders, and always aim for genuine, helpful interactions. When done right, people will appreciate your contact and even engage more with you.
